Official Promotional Synopsis:

Deathsong

Two benevolent alien elves, with a hostile alien ship in hot pursuit, are given asylum aboard Starlab. They have with them an instrument developed through the principle of bio-harmonics, a musical science devoted to the healing of living organisms by "tuning" them. The hostile vessel controls Deathsong, the direct antithesis of the elves' music. We become witness to the ultimate struggle between the alien music forms.

The Story:

A ship with two occupants contacts Starlab asking for sanctuary.  They are pursued by Helon in a huge ship.  Starlab allows Xena and Whiffy to board Starlab.  Helon then threatens to shatter Starlab “like delicate crystal”.

Editorial Comments:

Sometimes it sounds like the character name is Wiffy and other times Withey, depending upon who says the name.

Again a vocoder is used to provide alien voices.  This time they actually use it to allow the aliens to sing. In my opinion, the idea of using sound to cause destruction or healing is good.  The use of the vocoder in the voices also works fine in this episode.  I like the use of the voices.  I feel that having the aliens sing with the vocoder, while the sound and harmony is excellent, I feel it makes the story unintentionally silly.

Chuck Olsen’s character “Buddy” does not appear in this episode but his Cadbury commercial is still used in the national commercial version.  Likewise, the character of Jon Graydon does not appear.

The alien assistant Cataract is voiced like Peter Lorre.

It is stated that the planet of Aragon has only 12 physicians, but it is enough because accidents are rare.  It seems like there would be more reasons to have doctors than just accidents, but again, this is science fiction so anything is possible.

This is the first episode where Roger Dressler is listed as a starring cast member.
